After under three months on the market, we finally have a hard date for complete and utter disinterest in the Veer from HP: October 17th.
The Veer launched in May to lukewarm reviews and fierce defense from the webOS community. Major subjects of complaint concerning the device included its minuscule screen, mediocre camera, its misleading advertising regarding '4G' connectivity, its lack of support for threaded messaging, the non-standard USB cable, lack of a flash, lack of apps, the tiny, nonremoveable battery, the fact that headphone usage required an adapter, and (among its fans) lack of marketing push from HP and AT&T.
Following two months of disappointing sales, HP finally issued a press release stating, among other things, that "the Veer is simply not selling" and "our customers clearly want the Pre 3 at this point" as well as holding a Twitter Q&A following the press conference. Stephen DeWitt, Senior Vice President of the webOS Global Business Unit, when pressed to comment on the memo, tweeted: "We all wanted to love the Veer, but the fact is that we really didn't do any market research before we released it, & it was a huge mistake."
"Look," continued DeWitt in another tweet, "if you bought the Veer, we love you. It's certainly a cute little phone."
"But the fact remains that it didn't make us money, and therefore we will cease to give a flying shit about it following the 17th."
"Seriously," he added in a fourth tweet: "We fired all the people that were supposed to have been doing market research."
According to the press release, the Veer will cease to receive OTA updates enabling features such as Enyo and Touch-To-Share support, and training documents will no longer be sent to AT&T store employees. Additionally, as the Veer reaches its end of life, no attempts will be made to cut prices through AT&T, with the advertised price remaining at $99.99.
We managed to get ahold of HP CEO Leo Apotheker to ask him about the upcoming Veer Apathy Day. He stated: "I'm not sure what these people are talking about. We will continue to stand behind the Veer, and in fact I have seen that in a matter of weeks we will have a Sprint version with WiMax, Enyo support, and an OTA update to webOS 3.0.2."
Unfortunately, at around that point Mr. Apotheker noticed the means of this reporter's entrance (a grappling hook embedded in one of the desks in his office) and had us escorted out... so this is all the information we have for today.
According to all of HP besides its CEO, Veer Apathy Day will hit October 17th. How do you feel about this? Excited? Betrayed? Skeptical? Sound off in the comments below!
